As a parent of a child with a disability, your child has the right to free (no cost to your family) and appropriate public education (the educational services must be individuality designed to meet each child's unique needs).
For students with a diagnosed disability that adversely affects their ability to make progress in the general education setting without additional support, an IEP ( Individualized Education Plan) may be written to help your child succeed in school. The IEP is a collaborative effort, bringing parents, special education professionals, school psychologists and behavior specialists together to develop an effective educational plan for the student.
If needed, children with a diagnosed disability can receive related services at no cost to your family. Related services may include, but not limited to, social work support services, occupational services, physical therapy, speech and language, and audiology services. These services are listed in the IEP, which legally guarantees the listed services to be delivered to your child.
Least Restrictive Environment (LRE), is a law that mandates that a student with a disability must have classes with their non-disabled peers as well as have access to the general education curriculum. In order to determine what the appropriate setting is for a student, a support team will review the student's strengths, concerns, and needs, and assess which educational placement best serves the needs for the student.
The following PDF files are from the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE). They provide information on Least Restrictive Environment, Individualized Education Plan, Response to Intervention, and what the Referral & Evaluation process entails.
